Austin’s Top Tech Industries

Austin is well-known for being a high-tech city. The residents here are digital savvy. This may be due to the presence of many big-time tech companies whose headquarters, plants and offices are located here.

The main reasons why tech industries chose Austin can be owed to its being a state capital and the presence of a top-notch campus like the University of Texas. Having a quality workforce coupled with a desirable living environment, there is no question why lots of leading computer and technology companies has found a niche in this city, which is now deemed as the Silicone Hills.

One of the leading corporations in Austin is Dell, Inc. This company was the largest in the city area. It provides jobs for as many as 17,000 employees. The focus of Dell Corporation is the development, manufacture and selling of personal computers and other computer-related products and services. As of 2008, Dell was the second largest seller of PCs behind HP. It was founded by Michael Dell, who was a drop-out from the University of Texas.

International Business Machines or IBM has a Research Laboratory situated in Austin. This company is also one of the largest employers in the Austin area with roughly 6,000 employees. The IBM’s research labs are focused on inventing high-performance microprocessors and computers.

Freescale Semiconductor (formerly the Motorola’s Semiconductor Products Sector) is the third biggest tech employer in Austin with around 5,500 employees. Motorola’s semiconductor operation propelled the high-tech adventure in Austin area in the ‘70s. Now known as Freescale Semiconductor, it still focuses on semiconductor chip designs and manufacturing.

Other very well-known tech companies that are also located in Austin include Solectron, which is involved in manufacturing electronics and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), whose Austin’s operation is centered on Flash memory products.
